Buying the right-sized futon mattress is an important step in your selection process, but many people overlook the key benefits of a larger size over the standard choices. Full size futon mattresses are a popular choice for college students and singles, but the queen can offer other benefits including additional space and more comfort.

The queen size and full size look very similar, but there are a few significant differences. The full size futon mattress is ideal for single sleepers who need extra space, while the queen size futon mattress can accommodate two people very comfortably.

How do you make the choice?

Choosing a Full Size Mattress

Full size mattresses are 54 inches and 75 inches long; this makes them 16 inches wider than a single bed, and offers plenty of space for a single sleeper who wants more space. It is ideal for women and people with smaller frames, and men usually cannot sleep on a full size mattress comfortably. If you’re under 5 feet 5 inches tall, sleep alone, and need to accommodate for a small bedroom or sleeping area, the full size mattress will be your best choice. In summary, the full size mattress is ideal for:

  • Students sleeping alone
  • Teens and young adults who want more space than a single bed can offer
  • Petite women sleeping alone
  • Young children who would like a larger bed

Choosing a Queen Futon Mattress

Queen size futon mattresses are 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, and can accommodate two average-sized adults very comfortably. They are designed for single sleepers who want as much as space as possible, as well as couples; the Queen futon mattress is becoming a popular choice for both singles and couples, and many people adapt well to the extra 6 inches of width and 5 inches of length available over a full size mattress.

Queen size futon mattresses are ideal for guest rooms that will accommodate a single sleeper, as well as master bedrooms for couples who prefer not to have extra space.Single sleepers can benefit from lots of extra space, and the mattress can accommodate two people very easily when needed. In summary, you should pick the queen size mattress if you:

  • Will be sharing the bed
  • Enjoy extra space when sleeping alone
  • Have a medium or large frame, and need more space to spread out
  • Have a medium to small-sized master bedroom

Making sure you choose the right-sized futon mattress is an important part of your futon selection process. You will also need to buy the appropriate covers and bedding furnishings, and these will fit snugly and neatly on the mattress as you change it from a sofa to a bed.The key things to consider when choosing your futon mattress are; the type of people that will be using it, and the primary use of the futon.Keeping these items in mind can make it much easier to narrow down your decision for a full or a queen futon mattress so you can rest and relax with the perfect amount of space.

  1. I have a queen size futon frame but want a full futon mattress…..will that work. The queen mattress I have is too tick to use as a sofa……

  2. If your mattress is too thick to use as a sofa, a thinner queen size mattress is your best bet. Using a full size mattress on a queen size frame will leave you with a gap well over 6″ on each edge. If your mattress is difficult to shift from bed to sofa, try a mattress that is made of polyester (much lighter) or 6″ thick.
