Futon Assembly Tips
If you’ve found this page, it’s likely that you are either preparing to assemble your futon frame or in the middle of the process. The following tips will help you assemble like the pros.
Step 1: Read the Instructions!
Many people pick up their assembly instructions, glance at the pictures, and never look at them again. You’ll be using this futon frame for the next decade or longer, so it is more than worth the time to follow the directions closely to avoid any costly mistakes. While you are reading your futon directions, you should get a clear idea of how much space you’ll need to assemble this futon frame. Consider assembling the frame in the garage or another room if your work area seems too small. Also, open up any plastic bags and sort the bolts, washers, and nuts within into groups of the same item. This will make finding the right nuts a bolts an easier, logical process.
Step 2: Futon Assembly Tips
Don’t worry about tightening your bolts all the way. Hand tighten them enough to keep the frame held together. This will give you a smidge of flexibility when getting the other parts of your futon to line up that really helps. This is especially important for wood futon frames, as the seat deck bumpers line up much easier with the arms when the bolts are still loose. Having a friend to help you really makes a difference, as half of the battle with assembly involves holding each piece still while assembling.
Step 3: Test the Futon Frame’s Operation
Before putting the mattress on your newly constructed futon frame, try converting it from sofa to bed a few times. Keep an eye out for any misalignment or stiff points in the construction. Hand tighten each bolt and store your allen key in a place that you will remember. Stand your futon mattress upright before putting on the futon cover. This makes the whole process much easier. Don’t pull too hard on that zipper! If it seems to be impossible, remember that it is supposed to be tight, and that you likely have the mattress out of position. Try adjusting the futon cover and tug at that zipper again.
Step 4: Enjoy your Futon!
Remember to flip and rotate your mattress many times in the first few months of ownership. It will really pay dividends, as it will last much longer if it is broken in evenly. Also remember where your allen key is. You should re-tighten your bolts at least once a year to prevent the futon frame from getting loose. These little hints should help you make your futon investment last for a decade or longer!
